Why do We Shorten

There are several factors that can cause humans to appear shorter as they age. Some of these involve changes to the body and bones:

1. Spine Shrinkage: The spine consists of intervertebral discs which can shrink over time. This process can reduce height because the space between the vertebrae is reduced.

2. Bone Fractures: Fractures, especially in the spine or hips, can cause a reduction in height. The healing process can result in permanent height loss.

3. Decreased Muscle Mass: Loss of muscle mass, which generally occurs with age, can cause a less upright body posture and a shorter appearance.

4. Pressure on Bones and Joints: In some people, pressure on bones and joints can change overall body posture, resulting in a decrease in height.

5. Loss of Bone Density: Osteoporosis is a condition in which bone density decreases. This can make bones more fragile and increase the risk of fractures, which in turn can lead to a decrease in height.

These changes are natural and vary between individuals. While there is a loss in height that occurs with age, this is not experienced by everyone, and the rate of height loss can vary.
